Applications are invited for a Research Associate to study the origins of agriculture. The work will involve computer modelling experiments aimed at understanding the relative contributions of human and natural selection during plant domestication.
There are two opposing views about the origins of agriculture. One holds that agriculture was a deliberate human invention, and the second that agriculture arose as a result of coevolution between humans and wild plants. By identifying the importance of human versus natural selection we can begin to understand the extent to which domestication was driven by human activity as opposed to natural evolutionary events.
In addition to a PhD in a relevant field, you will have experience in the use of mathematical models to analysis genetic data, of computing environments such as Matlab or R, and of Bayesian approaches in evolutionary biology.
This full-time post is funded by the European Research Council for a period of three years starting 1 April 2012.
